Accessing the Wireless Settings of a Linksys WRT160N Router

Personalizing the default password of the router is important to prevent hackers from accessing your wireless router settings. This configuration is different from the WEP key, which is used to connect to the router for Internet access. To access and setup your wireless router settings, type in the default gateway 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of your browser. If it won’t open, follow these steps.

Verify the default gateway address

  • Click on Start > Go to Run > Type in cmd then press ENTER > Once the command prompt is open type in ipconfig then press Enter.

Turn-OFF firewall

  • If your computer has the correct default gateway (192.168.1.1), but the browser still won’t recognize it, switching off the firewall may sometimes work.
  • Click on Start > Go to Control Panel > Double-click Windows Firewall > Click the radio button beside Off (not recommended), then click OK.

Optimize the web browser

  • Old cache and cookies may affect access to the router settings. Follow these steps to clean-up your browser.
  • Click on Start > Go to Control Panel > Double-Click on Internet Options > Click Delete… under Browsing history > All boxes should be checked in the Delete Browsing History window > Click the Delete button in the lower part.
  • Once your computer is done removing old cache and cookies, go to the Content tab and click Clear SSL State > Close the Internet Options window and restart the computer.

If these steps fail to resolve the issue, then try to use a different browser like Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. Using a different computer (if available) is also another option.
