How to Troubleshoot Code 39 Error

Error codes, as scary as they may look like, can become your best friend when you are troubleshooting a computer problem. If not for error codes, we would have a hard time figuring out the root cause of the problem. Error codes are displayed by your computer as a way of telling you the system is detecting an issue. Use this as a clue to help you in fixing the problem.
A common error Windows users get is code 39, which will be displayed like this:
“Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)”
Errors like this can happen for a number of different reasons. It could be from malware infection, registry problems or hardware issues. One of the most common causes of system errors are bad drivers. This particular error can be brought about by a corrupt or missing driver that prevents your CD or DVD drive from working properly.
The quickest way to fix the problem is to update the driver through Device Manager. Follow these steps:
- Click on Start and right-click on My Computer.
- Click on Manage and choose Device Manager on the left hand pane.
- Locate the CD drive, which would usually have a yellow exclamation mark, and right-click on it.
- Choose “Update Driver” and follow the Update Wizard.
If the same problem or error code is shown even after a successful update, you might need to re-install the driver for the device. Follow these steps:
- Choose the troubled device on Device Manager and right-click on it.
- Click on “Uninstall” and follow the instructions displayed on screen.
- Reboot the computer.
- After rebooting, launch the Device Manager again.
- Click Action on the menu bar and choose “Scan for hardware changes” to re-install the driver again.
- Go to My Computer and check if the CD or DVD drive is now displayed.
Most of the time, this troubleshooting step would be able to fix the issue. There are certain times however, that more advanced steps will be required. You can also fix the code 39 error through the Registry Editor, but this option is not advised as a simple mistake of deleting wrong registry entries can cause your whole system to crash.
